A popular trend emerging in European cities is taking free local tours usually consisting of walking/day tours or themed outings like haunted sites, historical places, or the like.
How it works:

You meet at the designated meeting spot/time and take your tour.

Upon conclusion of the tour - if you enjoyed it, you tip the tour guide.
The great thing about these tours is that there is little risk of putting out money and then being disappointed. If you don’t like it, then don’t tip (or give a nominal tip).
